Team Hidi 2.0

Team Hidi is not a function, party, or even an event—it is unlike anything Atlanta has ever experienced. The restaurant industry is one of the most (if not the most) competitive businesses that exists.

Last year, when we all came together for the Hidingers, for Ryan, for The Giving Kitchen, everyone was in awe of how all of these amazing people, chefs, and restaurants could be in the same room for any reason. It was the best party the city had ever seen, and we just happened to raise a lot of money as well.

This year, with Ryan’s passing a little over a week prior, there was more of a somber mood in the air—this year, it had much more meaning. Hearing Jen, his wife, speak after the video that could only be described as perfect, was difficult to say the least.

Special shout out to GOM family and friends who helped make the event so special:
BoccaLupo, Canoe, Fox Bros. BBQ, H. Harper Station, Holeman and Finch Public House,
One Eared Stag, Rosebud, Seven Lamps, Taqueria del Sol, and SweetWater for all of the support. We look forward to the opening of Staplehouse in the spring and what it will do for the Atlanta restaurant community.

and a big thanks to Erica with Letter B Photography for the images

We Love Billy - Make No Bones About It

We love Billy. Ever since the first time we visited Muscle Shoals with our friends from the Southern Foodways Alliance, we have sported the fine handiwork of Billy Reid. Billy and his lovely wife Jeanne are to fashion what Frank and Pardis Stitt are to Southern cuisine.

We love giving the gift of Billy Reid -- and receiving Billy Reid gifts (hint hint) -- Chef Sean Brock gifted a cool t-shirt to Jeff last year, I gave Kempten an amazing purple silk top in honor of her bridesmaid dresses a while back, Jeff's Mom gave him a brand spanking new cord jacket and shirts last fall, Jeff gave me an amazing leather jacket and a few shirts and a skirt, Green Olive gave Alvin a new pair of shoes so he could go on to find his way properly in this world -- and recently Meggan received a gift certificate for her birthday. Now Billy Reid has introduced shoes for women -- save me now. The new website launched this week as well -- check it out.

Here is a fun piece posted in GQ Magazine this month -- 10 Essentials By Billy Reid:

1. AARON CORD JEAN, $195, SIMILAR STYLES AVAILABLE AT BILLYREID.COM

2. SOUTHERN FOODWAYS ALLIANCE T-SHIRT, $44, AVAILABLE AT BILLYREID.COM

4. KENTWOOD ROPER BOOT, $450, AVAILABLE AT BILLYREID.COM

Don't Miss the SFA Potlikker Film Fest on August 22 in Athens, GA

The Potlikker Film Fest is an opportunity to showcase SFA documentaries, alongside local food films, in all kinds of places. Each Potlikker Film Fest is infused with local flavor, but—in general—expect an evening with live music and short films, refreshing libations, and SFA snacks (including a potlikker shot with cornbread, handed as you walk in the door). Tickets for Potlikker events are SFA's most affordable; it’s a good way to meet the SFA, or introduce us to your friends and neighbors.

Click Here to purchase tickets. Print your receipt and bring it with you to the event. It's your ticket. Must be 21 to attend, as Potlikker Athens will offer music, films, SFA snacks, and cold beer. We're unable to offer refunds, but you can gift your ticket to a friend if plans change.

Ben's Chili Bowl - Washington, DC

Ben's Chili Bowl was at the top of my list of things to do in DC (Washington Monument? Meh). My plan was to stop by there Saturday night after the Southern Foodways Alliance Potlikker Film Festival. But earlier in the day I went to watch a ball game, and here's the first thing that greeted me upon entering:

I proceeded to order the 'half-smoke':

And I was proud to see that the Atlanta pork sandwich is making it to those 'Taste Of Major League Baseball' stands:

So after fried chicken, oysters, ribs, etc. at the Film Fest, I decided it was a good idea to make the trek to the original Ben's. The line of 100 or so people well past midnight didn't deter me from getting one more half-smoke...

Iberico Ham - Washington, DC

Looking through the paper for something to do on Saturday morning, I came across a mention of a place that had Iberico ham, so I high-tailed it to Canales Deli at the Eastern Market. My 1/8 pound order came up at around $20...definitely worth it:
