Gryffon's Aerie Burgers

Update on the meat post below - we cooked up some of the beef for lunch today and made mini burgers (the photo below is a green chile specimen) - this is by far the best grass-fed beef around...

Hop City Open!

Hop City, the craft beer superstore at Marietta St. and Howell Mill, opened today. They claim to have 1,000 beers in stock...I didn't count, but there were plenty. Best part: It's about a 30-yard pass from the office. We'll be set as soon as the Five Seasons Brewing opens next door (tables and chairs are now out on their deck...it has to be a matter of days...).

Nashville Farmers' Market - May 2

While we're quite excited that our new poster will be debuting (check back next week to see the design!) the real news is:
On Saturday, May 2, the Nashville Farmers' Market kicks off spring with the Market House Celebration, a festive — and free — day of local music, local food and homegrown fun for the whole family. From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., shoppers can gather 'round the Jenn-Air cooking stage in the Market House to become inspired by some of Nashville's freshest foods and hottest chefs. Kids (and adults) can get their hands dirty at the veggie planting station, where they can plant their own organic bean or tomato seeds to take home and add to their backyard garden.
The Nashville Farmers' Market has more than 40 farmers throughout the season, bringing freshly harvested fruits, veggies, eggs, meats and artisan foods.

Purity Lovers - Want A New PR Firm?

Purity Dairies recently launched puritylovers.com, an online resource for "Purity Lovers," a phrase taken from the side of the classic cardboard cartons. The website offers coupons, original recipes and unique giveaways, ranging from free T-shirts to stays at the Opryland Hotel (with Swedish massages and personal trainer sessions).

Okay, I am just saying it out loud for all to see so pass the word on if you know them: We want to handle PR for Purity Dairies. There, I said it. Give them my number. Shameless...but obsessed I am with Purity Dairies

The Oval Room - Washington, DC

Big thanks to Chef Tony Conte at The Oval Room for a HUGE eight-course lunch...some of the meal's a blur, but a couple of the highlights were the lemon pasta with uni, and this dessert that prominently featured pink peppercorn...

Ben's Chili Bowl - Washington, DC

Ben's Chili Bowl was at the top of my list of things to do in DC (Washington Monument? Meh). My plan was to stop by there Saturday night after the Southern Foodways Alliance Potlikker Film Festival. But earlier in the day I went to watch a ball game, and here's the first thing that greeted me upon entering:

I proceeded to order the 'half-smoke':

And I was proud to see that the Atlanta pork sandwich is making it to those 'Taste Of Major League Baseball' stands:

So after fried chicken, oysters, ribs, etc. at the Film Fest, I decided it was a good idea to make the trek to the original Ben's. The line of 100 or so people well past midnight didn't deter me from getting one more half-smoke...

Iberico Ham - Washington, DC

Looking through the paper for something to do on Saturday morning, I came across a mention of a place that had Iberico ham, so I high-tailed it to Canales Deli at the Eastern Market. My 1/8 pound order came up at around $20...definitely worth it:

How You Know You're In Alabama

The elusive 'Dr. Wham,' one of the countless Dr. Pepper knockoffs. As far as I can tell, this one's only available in a few towns in Alabama (hello Tuscumbia!). Definitely cooler than Wal-Mart's 'Dr. Thunder,' but not quite as cool as the even-harder-to-find 'Dr. IGA.'

Two Of Our Favorite Things

We received our new issue of Meatpaper in the mail today...featuring a nice article on our man Allan Benton. This one's 'The Pig Issue,' and there's even a tasting roundup of veggie bacons. Yikes.

Tex-Mex and BBQ - Houston, TX

It's amazing how much meat and cheese you can cram in over a weekend if you really apply yourself. We were in Houston for Amy Evans' opening at Koelsch Gallery and knew we needed to check out some Tex-Mex. So as soon as we got into town, we made a beeline for the original Ninfa's. On the menu: cheese enchilada, beef fajitas, taco a ninfa, taquito, fish tacos, and the best beans anywhere:

We also made it to Goode Co. BBQ, for, among other things, this monster of a 'sandwich' - you're looking at a brisket/jalapeno sausage/quarter duck combo here:

This was so good that I made a point to hit Goode's taqueria for migas at breakfast before leaving town:

Spend or Save? We'll let you know on Tuesday!

The Dow Jones Industrial Average wrapped up its best four-week run since 1933 last week. However, the key to sustaining the rally will be this week's quarterly earnings reports. Tuesday officially kicks off the first quarter earnings season.

Yeah Linton! - Food & Wine Best New Chef 2009

Food & Wine 2009 Best New Chefs Revealed last night...Linton Hopkins does Atlanta proud!

Linton Hopkins
Restaurant Eugene / Holeman & Finch Public House, Atlanta

When Linton Hopkins was a kid, his mom once refused to make him hollandaise sauce for his eggs — so he prepared it himself, with a recipe from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Hopkins still has the (egg-stained) cookbook, plus a vast collection of others including Junior League and community cookbooks.

Sublime Doughnuts - Atlanta, GA

Dulce de Leche with Caramel Icing, Butter Toffee, Red Velvet Cake, Chocolate Banana Fritter (Elvis Style). Just a few of the varieties on offer at Sublime Doughnuts, at 10th and Northside. How can you not love a doughnut shop that also provides you quality cookbooks to read while you wait (Daniel Boulud, guides to meat, even CIA cookbooks)? Below are the White Chocolate, Dulce de Leche, and TANGerine, made with Tang, I assume...
