Eating In And Around Bristol, TN
See below for a few of the highlights from a recent Southern Foodways Alliance field trip to Bristol:
Beef sandwich from Ridgewood Barbecue:
The Burger Bar - said to be the site of Hank Williams' last meal:
Sean Brock of McCrady's cooked a three-course trout dinner at the Bristol train station:
Pal's, the best fast food (and building) ever:
Fried bologna sandwich and cheeseburger from the Soda Shoppe in Abingdon, VA:
A round of Valleydale chili dogs overlooking the Bristol Motor Speedway (notice the industrial-strength red dye in those dogs):
Finally, here's Jeff, just before taking some laps around Bristol Motor Speedway (and apparently being scolded by Angie Mosier to keep it under control):

Martin's BBQ Joint - Big Apple BBQ Fest
Martin's rig was the place to be for whole hog this year...when they would load a pig onto the smoker, a mob of people would gather 'round, snapping their cell phone cameras, trying to get a glimpse. It was quite a sight, and we were proud to see these guys getting the recognition they deserve.

The Pit - Big Apple BBQ Fest
As usual, Ed Mitchell's whole hog sandwiches were a highlight of the festival this year. We've already gone on and on about his pork several times before, so here's just a few photos:

Blue Smoke - Big Apple BBQ Fest
It's impossible to not have the time of your life when pitmaster Kenny Callaghan of Blue Smoke is hosting...we filled up here on so much food Sunday that we barely had room for anything else. These folks know a thing or two about hospitality...

Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Bar - Big Apple BBQ Fest
We were happy that The Crooners made a repeat appearance this year at the Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Bar outside Eleven Madison Park...see the photos - how often do you see a high-energy string band playing in front of a Relais & Chateaux plaque?
